“This song contains elements of sadness and melancholy a bit like my agent’s face when I told him I wanted to do a banjo tour” – Steve Martin

It worked both because he really is an impressive musician, and because he managed to get the balance between playing and joking absolutely right

Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers were superb last night. Bluegrass-tic! So chuffed that his encore was ‘King Tut’.

Having fallen for the comic genius of Steve Martin 26 years ago when I first saw the Jerk, I was anxious about seeing him play bluegrass should he staunchly refuse to take his music anything other than absolutely seriously. Inwardly, clearly he does, a musician of no mean skill, but that he recognised his audience’s thirst for a rare glimpse at the ‘wild & crazy guy’ of old was hugely welcome. As a statement of intent, Martin’s assertion that “this combines my two favourite things, comedy – and charging people to listen to music” says it all. Forget the tired Hollywood re-hases, Steve. Your two favourite things are what you do best. Oh – and the Steep Canyon Rangers were awesome!
